Our MP Must Defend the Rule of Law

September 11, 2020 12:49 PM

Bromsgrove Lib Dems have criticised government plans to violate international law by unilaterally rewriting the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement the Conservatives signed into law under a year ago.

The Lib Dems expressed concern that Britain's long-standing reputation for abiding by international law and being taken for her word will be undermined by the plans which breach the law.

Sam Evans, a law graduate spoke on behalf of the Lib Dems saying: 'This time last year the Government unlawfully shut down parliament. Only a few weeks before Sajid Javid opposed the move then decided to U-turn and defend the unlawful prorogation.'

'Here we are a year later and the Government again decides to breach the law. This time by amending a treaty that they told us was "a great deal" at last year's general election, but now Boris doesn't like the Brexit Withdrawal Treaty he negotiated and signed into law.'

Sam added: 'Our MP must stand up for our great country's long-standing reputation of defending the rule of law, rather than trying to undermine the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement that he supported only a few months ago.'

Bromsgrove's Lib Dem group have also raised concerns about the UK's ability to now criticise other countries for flouting international law.

The concerns follow warnings from law makers in the US that a UK-US trade deal would not be possible if the Government's rewriting of the law undermines the Good Friday peace agreement in Northern Ireland.
