Local Activist Asks MP to Back Inquiry into Covid-19 Response

Local resident Sam Evans is leading calls from the Lib Dem Group for Sajid Javid to back a public inquiryBromsgrove MP Sajid Javid has been asked by the Lib Dems to join calls for an inquiry into the Government's handling of the Coronavirus pandemic when the lockdown ends.

Writing to Mr Javid this week, the Bromsgrove Lib Dem group asked the MP to back calls for "an independent judge-led public inquiry" which have been led by Sir Ed Davey. The letter's author, Sam Evans, outlined that there is a case for the local MP to back a review into the Government's handling of Covid-19 irrespective of whether people support or oppose the Government's response.

Lib Dem spokesperson Sam stated: "Irrespective of views on whether the Government's handling of this crisis has been good or bad, the people of Bromsgrove and Britain are owed a duty to independently review the UK's response. This allows us to learn from our response and aids us in tackling any future pandemics."

"Sadly, Bromsgrove's Covid-19 death toll is now the highest in Worcestershire and four times the number of deaths in New Zealand, a country of around 5 million people."

"Britain also now has highest death toll in Europe. Each death is a terrible tragedy for the individual and their family. A public inquiry can help provide much needed answers to questions over the UK's response."

The Bromsgrove Lib Dems have also pointed to examples of other countries which have committed to public inquiries, such as Norway, which will conclude its review in March next year.

The group are awaiting a response from Sajid Javid's office.
