Liz Lynne MEP with Great Alne WI President Barbara Munton, group organiser Teresa Quick and members of Great Alne WI at the European Parliament in Brussels
Liberal Democrat MEP Liz Lynne this week hosted a visit by one of Warwickshire's most active Women's Institute groups at the European Parliament in Brussels.
Teresa Quick and 25 members from the Great Alne and Kinwarton WI toured the European Parliament and then heard from Liz Lynne MEP who outlined her work in the European Parliament representing the county.
Re-elected earlier this year, Warwickshire's Euro MP Liz Lynne has been promoted to become First Vice President of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee. Liz has made getting rid of unnecessary red tape and fighting discrimination a top priority for the new Parliament.
Liz Lynne said: "I was pleased to see such a large delegation of interested members from Great Alne WI making the trip to find out more about what the European Parliament does and how important MEPs can be in representing local and regional interests."
"I am particularly pleased to see the strong support shown by the WI for more Europe wide action to tackle the scourge of human trafficking, something that I have pushed for many years."
Women's Institute President Barbara Munton said: "We were delighted to meet Mrs Lynne and for her to show us around the European Parliament building and to explain how the Parliament works.
We appreciated the length of time that Mrs Lynne gave to answering our many and varied questions. This time was greatly in excess of the time that had been allotted.
The visit was very informative. For those among us with misconceptions and misunderstandings about the workings of the EU many facts were corrected and others clarified.
Many of us were unaware of the extent of the input of EU money into our own area of Alcester and Stratford on Avon.
We were very impressed to see the effects of cross-party work on certain issues, in particular on those central to Mrs Lynne's work.
It was a very enjoyable community event and we are all very grateful to Mrs Lynne for sponsoring our visit."
